Took some time off. Wrote two short stories and did lots of gardening. Then the pandemic struck so couldn't really do much else. After agreeing with the wife that I was too young to retire I decided to get back in the job market. Took some time off. Wrote two short stories and did lots of gardening. BeWiser Insurance is one of the leading privately-owned insurance brokers in the UK. Reporting directly to the board I have overseen or been actively involved in the complete transformation of the IT and Telecoms infrastructure. Just a few of the many highlights are: - Implemented VMware ESX virtualisation across all server rooms. Reducing the number of physical servers to a handful. Improving the reliance of critical systems and allowing the IT team to quickly deploy new servers on demand. - Migrated the companies email system from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2016. Improving email filtering by migrating to a Barracuda based filter, blocking 20,000 virus or spam emails a month. - Migrated the companies’ legacy network from flat companywide /18 subnet to smaller subnets across all 6 BeWiser buildings. Reducing network traffic and improving security. - Upgraded all PC’s from Windows XP to Windows 10 Pro. Significantly reducing the risk of a virus impacting the company. - Migrated the companies 300 seat call centre from an old and unsupported version of Avaya to Avaya v7.02. Migrating the users in the Hampshire and Wiltshire Call Centres to softphones. - Migrated the Firewalls from out of support WatchGuard to a Fortinet solution managed by our MPLS provider. - Implemented a monitoring system covering all aspects of the IT Infrastructure from PC network ports to Server performance. Helping to identify issues on the systems and predict resource exhaustion. My responsibilities include the day to day running of the IT Support team of 9 staff including the Service Manager. The team manage all aspects of the IT infrastructure, from the Helpdesk to the WAN. Supporting three separate business across several buildings in Hampshire and Wiltshire. Show less

Level3 is a Telecommunications Company providing Voice, Data, and Cloud services to large enterprise customers. Headquartered in Colorado, U.S.A. Previous companies include Global Crossing (M&A 2011) and Racal Telecom (M&A 1999). Level 3 purchased Global Crossing and my role did not significantly change. The Hosted Services offering was retired by the new business and my responsibilities reverted back to supporting the internal IT infrastructure and the Secure Network. Highlights: - Managed the migration of 200+ physical servers to virtual servers, stored on our high availability centralised VMware farm. Reducing the Data Centre footprint, and improving the service to our customers. - Working closely with the US Monitoring and Tools team configured my 1700 supported servers into the global monitoring solution. Ensuring threshold triggers, ticket routing, and out of hours notification were properly configured and routed. - Worked alongside the Security team on quarterly IT Health Checks and Penetration Tests as part of our PSN and CAS/T certifications. Managing the remediation activities ensuring a balance between Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability. - Migrated our legacy backup infrastructure onto NetBackup arrays with automatic data replication between our Basingstoke and London Data Centres. - Migrated our Windows Server 2003 operating systems onto newer versions or arranged for their services to be retired. - Reduced the ticket, time to repair, from 75% within SLA to 97% within SLA. The IT Infrastructure Support team managed all IT infrastructure across EMEA. Consisting of 6 Senior and Principal support engineers we managed over 1700 servers and various types of infrastructure including Windows Server OS, Solaris, Redhat, Centos, Storage Area Networks (IBM, Hitachi, HP), Hypervisors (VMware, Hyper-V, Citrix), Firewalls (Juniper, Fortinet, Lucent, Cisco), Active Directory (8 domains) and Backup (Netbackup, Veeam, Legato Networker). Global Crossing was a global Telecommunications company. M&A by Level 3 in October 2011. The Windows and Unix teams were restructured and with my experience of building and managing both operating systems I was asked to head up a new support team with staff from both skill-sets. Initially supporting internal IT systems and the secure network we were later asked to provide 2nd and 3rd line support to our hosted service/cloud offering. Highlights include:- - Responsibility for managing up to 2300 servers and 9 Senior and Principal engineers and 2 Technical Service Managers. - Seconded to the Network Operations Department for 4 months to resolve issues with their hosted HDS USP/VM storage array. Was asked to configure high availability for one of their customers virtual systems and Oracle databases. Eventually migrating support from them to IT. - Implementation of a Cyber Security Monitoring system by Huntsman into our Secure Network to meet our government requirements. - Documented the Infrastructure Handover Process, following ITIL, ensuring systems built by the Delivery team were supportable when taken Live. - Implemented ITIL into our Hosted Services offering, ensuring each customer had a Run Book detailing the service offered by Global Crossing. - Transitioned the support of 250 Unix systems, spread across Europe, from the US support team into the EMEA team.
