  As a USFS Wilderness Ranger our job was to educate the public on the USFS regulations so that they understood the importance of following those rules. Our main role in ensuring the adherence to USFS regulations was to make contact with every visitor in the backcountry we came across so we could check for a wilderness permit. The wilderness permit system is the most important tool the USFS has to track and limit the amount of visitors in a given area by maintaining a trailhead quota. The visitors who are there for commercial reasons are required to have a commercial use permit which allows the USFS to track how many people are in the wilderness areas for recreation versus commercial use. That documentation helps the USFS collect a lot of information about how to best manage the wilderness areas based on the types of use and the frequency of the use.
