As a first-time product manager in the Midwest, I reached out to tens of experienced product managers in the Silicon Valley area looking for a mentor and some advice on problems that I was facing. None of them responded except for Jason. Over the past two and a half years, Jason has mentored me on customer development, communication, stakeholder management and countless other aspects of being a customer-driven product leader. Because of his mentorship, I’ve become our platform lead, the senior manager of customer experience and was recently voted as 2017 MVP by the team at our startup in Iowa. It’s clear that Jason has a learner’s mindset and is an expert on leadership, but above all, I’m constantly blown away by his ability to quickly understand my problems and his strong desire to help me learn and grow as a PM and person. I’ve saved months and years of future mistakes from talking to Jason and listening to his advice. I would highly recommend Jason as an executive, product lead, manager, or coach at any company and if I ever had the opportunity to work under him, it would be a no-brainer.

Jason is one of the most passionate, committed and intelligent people I've ever known. As one of my first bosses and mentors he taught me many of the early lessons I needed to learn when solving difficult startup challenges. He's also one of the most well-rounded people you'll ever meet which made him an incredibly effective founder. He has a keen eye for marketing, strong business acumen for sales, a technical eye for product and was a brilliant coach for the team. I look forward to seeing him excel in his future professional endeavors.

Product Leadership Consulting

Apr 2011 - Present
Over the years, I've coached many product managers to help accelerate their careers and deliver great results. I've also helped companies from launch to iteration and the many challenges of high growth and scaling product organizations. What some founders and PMs have said about working with me: - "Our head of product has gotten a ton of value and has significantly matured as a product leader while working with Jason. I appreciate all the support and guidance he shared with him, and recommend anyone who wants to grow their product leaders to work with Jason." - Ruben Guerrero CEO & Co-Founder, Sproutfi (YC S21) - "Jason has coached me on customer development, communication, stakeholder management and countless other aspects of being a customer-driven product leader. Because of his coaching, I’ve become our platform lead, the senior manager of customer experience and was voted as company MVP. Head of Product

Mar 2012 - Jun 2013
I helped KISSmetrics build a great customer-focused product using Lean principles and a passion for customer happiness as our engineering team grew from 3 to 10, and our sales team grew from 1 to 10 while always hitting their goals. During my time running product we: - Rebuilt our Live feature to be the best debugging and real time activity view on the analytics market while doubling usage & eliminating support overhead. - Improved our onboarding conversion rate by 68% through many A/B testing experiments. - Overhauled our People Search & details feature, the core of the KISSmetrics, people-driven tracking system. - Helped conceptualize, design, prototype and manage the early release of our Google Analytics iPhone app, MyAnalytics. - Identified our most profitable customer segments by leveraging our analytics and customer development interviews. Helped align sales, marketing and product to best attract, close and serve them within the product. - Developed and handed off to sales a Power Report upsell program, taking customers from small plans to enterprise level plans ($99/mo to 499+/mo). - Overhauled our Daily Metrics Email based on customer feedback, which improved adoption and open rates. - Led R&D to piloting of a SaaS Revenue Report to help companies calculate the most important metrics for a SaaS business (churn, MRR, LTV, etc). Prior to developing the report, I helped calculate KISSmetric's SaaS KPIs and extensively researched the various methods. I evolved our product processes as we grew from 14 to 34 employees, and formed and led a cross functional team that wrote our company values in the Summer of 2012. Most importantly, I built a customer driven culture throughout the product team and company through development and utilization of new and existing channels to connect with customers as well as our sales, marketing, and support teams. I taught team members customer development tactics, and used data and the voice of the customer at every opportunity. Show less

Co-Founder

Oct 2009 - Mar 2012
Greenhorn Connect was acquired by The Capital Network on August 4, 2014. I co-founded GreenhornConnect.com in October 2009 with Ashkan Afkhami to help the Boston startup community and its visitors find the resources, events and other content the vibrant ecosystem has to offer. At the start I hustled to do everything necessary to get us off the ground: marketing of the site through social channels and blogging, building relationships for key sponsors, forming partnerships with other tech supporting organizations, event organizing, legal formation and contracts, and of course, product management for the building and maintenance of the site with contract developers. Within 6 months of launch, we had created a profitable business model where none thought possible by leveraging multiple revenue streams that allowed me to hire other team members to help with many of those tasks. I'm proud to say that we've helped many team members jump start their career by giving them a shot to do new things, growing their visibility in the community and coaching them to develop the skills they want and need to succeed in their careers. In March 2012, I moved to San Francisco to run Product at KISSmetrics and handed the reigns to Paul Hlatky, who then served as Executive Director of Greenhorn Connect, while I handled financial and legal responsibilities remotely. In August 2014, I secured the future of Greenhorn Connect by negotiating an acquisition by The Capital Network (TCN). I stepped back fully at that time to focus on my new startup, Get Lighthouse. oneforty was the app store for Twitter. It was acquired by HubSpot in August 2011. I reported to our VP of Product, Jeremy Crane, to inform product decisions by owning company metrics, app developer relations, and regularly interviewing customers on both sides of our app marketplace. In my role: - Led exploration of new business opportunities and development of specific product offerings to targeted customers as we performed extensive Customer Discovery then Customer Development to develop a viable business model for oneforty. - Created metrics dashboard for in depth measurement of site activity and evaluation of new features - Performed customer development interviews with hundreds of users, brands, experts and tool/app companies (in person & via phone) and brought trends and patterns to the team for product decision making. - Developed early affiliates program for app/tool lead gen on oneforty - Created & shared with full team "unforty" presentation, an overall plan for how oneforty's current offerings could be altered to fit our business pivot. - Hired and then collaborated closely with our community manager, Janet Aronica. Value Media, Inc. creates web based products for bloggers and in consumer finance. I performed research and customer development for these products. My main focus was on helping test a new product, Gutenblog, for financial bloggers. Unfortunately, after numerous customer interviews, we concluded there was not sufficient interest in the product to continue with it.
