I work under Professor Fei Xu at the Berkeley Early Learning Lab. Our lab is interested in how young learners reason about probabilities, develop new categories, and acquire language. Our studies look at infants and children 4 months old to 12 years old and examine the influence of active learning on memory, causal reasoning and categorization. SHOCKS is a non-profit organization aimed at providing AEDs (automatic external defibrillators) to schools in California. Even though 15,000 children will die each year due to sudden cardiac arrest, California law does not require that these life saving devices be made available in schools. Our goal is to raise awareness and raise money to cover California with AEDs by 2030. Every week, this committee plans a fundraiser to hold on the UC Berkeley campus to raise money towards a charity or an organization. Each time money is raised, a different organization is chosen and all proceeds are donated to that organization. Being able to directly see where the money is going and how it is making an impact is the reason I devote my time to being a member of this particular AMSA committee.
