As an environmental services intern, my main focus was to test sites in The Woodlands, Texas in order to decrease the risk of the West Nile virus. Under my position, we strategically placed more than 75 mosquito traps a week all throughout the vulnerable areas of the community. Mosquitoes were sent daily to the Texas Department of State Health for further testing and examining. When a trap yielded a positive for West Nile, parameter tests and surveillances were conducted in the respective areas. With the use of GIS and other field methods, we performed inspections and treated all the possible infected neighborhoods. On a regular basis, we also examined and identifies over 40 different mosquito species residing in the area. In doing so, we were able to garner statistics of specific places and note patterns such as possible breeding grounds and high mosquito counts. In addition to mosquito surveillance, there was a focus of waste management. I monitored the community's waste in order to promote a higher conscience of recycling and composting in the area.
