To whom it may concern: I’m a lecturer and internship supervisor at Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands, unit Life Sciences & Technology. I had the pleasure of knowing Jarno van Wegberg during 2007 and 2011. Within the concept of education at our University of Applied Sciences between September 2007 and July 2011, I have worked with Jarno van Wegberg as his career supervisor. Frequently, we had scientific meetings in which the progress of his study and further career plans were discussed. In addition, in my function as senior lecturer I guided several projects in which Jarno participated. Thereby, I have gained a good picture of him as a scientific student and as a person. Jarno is a motivated young man of numerous talents and especially considerable self-discipline. During his study at our University of Applied Sciences I have known Jarno as a committed hardworking and result-focused student, dedicated, intelligent and questioning, professional, reliable, and sophisticated student. During teamwork he showed a great capability of working together and cooperativeness. Not only his grades for theoretical examinations were of high level, he has also shown to have excellent laboratory skills and to be of great value in group projects. With kind regards, Antje Hagendorf, PhD molecular biologist & senior lecturer internship coordinator BM & BT VHL, Unit LS&T, kamer Vb 1.15, Agora 1, 8934CJ Leeuwarden PB 1528, 8901BV Leeuwarden +31-58-2846386 antje.hagendorf@wur.nl Team manager Life Sciences Research & Development NHL, Unit LS&T, Johannes de Doperkerk, Agora 4, 8934CJ Leeuwarden +31-58-2846386 antje.hagendorf@wur.nl

Obesity is an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis and it has been shown that obesity induces accumulation of pro-inflammatory macrophages in the adipose tissue. In this study, I have investigated obesity-induced changes in mouse adipose tissue with a special focus on the effects of obesity on macrophage phenotype.

Increased levels of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) and a decreased glyoxalase-1 (GLO1) activity have been found in atherosclerotic plaques. GLO1 is an enzyme which breaks down AGE precursors and thereby prevents AGE formation. In this study, I have investigated the effects of short and long term exposure to high glucose levels on the GLO1 system in murine macrophages and human monocytes.
