Dec 2020 - Present
I lead the hardware team at Whitefox Defense, both through leading the members of the multi-disciplinary hardware team and by leading the direction of our best-in-class counter-UAS products. Hiring & Mentoring: I have conducted and administered many interviews, including interviewing a new member on the board of directors and a new CEO. Along with the Lead Software Engineer, we have mentored five students at Cal Poly Pomona, two of which just successfully defended their theses (congrats guys!) and one who is joining Whitefox as an intern. System Architecture: My multi-disciplinary experience in Mechanical, Electrical, and RF design enables me to effectively lead the architecture of our hardware products, and to evaluate the input of all the engineers. Design is a collaborative process, and my jack-of-all trades nature is effective due to the deep experience everyone else on the team brings. R&D: I work with the Senior R&D engineer and Lead Software Engineer on investigating paths for new products. The skills I have developed in grad school shine here, as I feel very comfortable reading and analyzing the latest research. Manufacturing: I created assembly plans, oversaw manufacturing, and performed inspections at our contract manufacturer's site, collaborating closely with their technicians to teach them how to build our systems. During supply shortages, I worked closely with our purchasing team to keep the manufacturing schedule on time and keep the process smooth. Electrical Design: Much of my work is the schematic design and layout of custom PCBs, which includes components like FPGAs, RF Transceivers, and high-speed interconnects. My proficiency with tools such as LTSpice, LTPowerCAD, and Ansys SIWave enables me to simulate potential designs. I also verify these designs by creating detailed test plans and test benches. I use my combined electrical and mechanical skills to develop products for Glenair’s STARPAN line. Variety is the spice of life; my days range from schematic capture and PCB layout, to writing embedded software, to mechanical design and prototyping, Some things I do: Electrical Design: Develop custom PCB's to interface Military grade (AN/PRC) and commercial radios with Glenair's STARPAN Hub. Schematic capture involving mixed-signal design, power conversion and regulation, digital high-speed signals, and legacy interface compatibility. PCB Layout: While I am not one of the layout specialists, I have done the PCB layout of several products and assisted in reviewing the layout of other boards. Mechanical Design: I have worked on the mechanical design of high-pressure tolerant subsea cables, connector backshells and accessories, conduit assemblies, PCB enclosures, and custom test fixtures, to name a few. I create both 3D models and 2D Drawings to support manufacturing. DFM and ASME Y14.5-2008 GD&T. Other documentation such as test reports, assembly instructions, BOM creation and job cards (manufacturing instructions) are all included as well. Ample use of 3D printing technology for prototyping, fit checks, and customer samples, primarily using SLA. Writing embedded software: C/C++ code for microcontrollers to control and interface the standard set of peripherals and sensors. Even some occasional motor control here and there, usually on test fixtures. All the usual fun protocols here - I2C, USB, Ethernet, SPI, plus some legacy synchronous and asynchronous serial communication. Show less

Created 2D and 3D Engineering Drawings of custom tools, components, and gauges using SolidWorks and PTC Creo (Pro Engineer) using ASME Y14.5 1994 standards. Led the design of a tool by creating concept drawings, a CAD model in SolidWorks, prototyping with 3D printing and improving the design through feedback testing. Provided assistance to the Mechanical Engineering staff to design tests to ensure products meet all customer requirements. Held verbal presentations to communicate progress to supervisors with both technical and non-technical backgrounds. Led the testing of a tool by creating the testing procedure, communicating with the testing lab, designing a gauge on SolidWorks and analyzing it using FEA, overseeing testing, analyzing test data on Excel and completing a report summarizing the results. Created transition reports using Microsoft Office (Word and PowerPoint) with recommendations for changes in unfinished projects at the end of the internship. Show less
