NOLA City Council The NOLA City Council is the legislative branch of New Orleans City government. The Council considers and enacts all local laws that govern the City of New Orleans. The Council also approves the operating and capital budgets for the City, as recommended by the mayor, and continually monitors revenues and expenditures for local government operations. The City Council is also the regulatory body for public utilities. It reviews and has final say on many land use and zoning matters, as well as considers major economic development projects for the City. As a Board of Review for Orleans Parish, the Council examines appeals of property tax assessments for real estate taxes, and certifies tax rolls to the Louisiana Tax Commission. Other responsibilities of the Council include overseeing the operation of the public access television in Orleans Parish.

• Uncovered corruption and mismanagement of state-run funding for Katrina Recovery programs; identified and saved millions of federal funds, as chairman of the Hurricane Recovery Committee. • Co-authored "Equal Pay for Women Act;" promoting an end to the gender pay gap. • Provided homestead exemptions for property owners in Orleans Parish; saved homeowners hundreds of dollars annually. • Increased severity of penalties for home invaders with deadly weapons; heightened safety for several communities.  Improved state's mental health programs and secured necessary services to aid those in need. • Expanded educational capacity of New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA), making NOCCA a full-time high school; positively impacted over 2,500 students since legislation passed in 2011.
