The municipality will take back control agian in that neighbourhood of the housing corporation. The activities mainly focus on the viability and safety in the neighborhood. The district consists several neighborhoods and the stadium of the soccer club Go Ahead Eagles. Voorstad Oost is a nice neighborhood with shops, but in recent years the district is reversed. I, together with residents and businesses have made a new vision. On that basis, the development process has started.

  Houten has grown considerably in the last decades. The Old Village is surrounded by new homes and (in the future), two major new (shopping) centers. This has much influence on the character of the old Houten. The parish between the orchards is being transformed into a nostalgic food court with terraces. The mayor and aldermen in the autumn of 2008 decided to actualize the vision and plan. The goal is to make the old village more visable and liveable.

The park was designed in consultation with the residents and there is even room to participate in management and maintenance.   Houten has an old monumental station building from 1868. It is no longer in use as a station, but it represents a piece of the history of the railways and Houten. The double track on the stretch Utrecht Geldermalsen threatened the building to be demolished. Fortunately, the municipality initiated the replacement of the building 150 meters to the south. After that it is restored. Now it houses a day care project for people with intellectual disabilities and the local archaeological group. The municipality and the housing corporation Viveste created the Station on Wheels Foundation to raise funds and attract sponsors to finance the entire project. On August 24, 2008, the old station building is driven to its new location. That was a true spectacle visited by many people and it received much attention from local, regional and national media, including the NOS and Heart of the Netherlands. Show less
