The NHISSOT deals with organ donation for the Republic of Ireland. We perform both serological and molecular HLA typing for both patients waiting to receive and organ and for deceased and living donors. NHISSOT also performs B27 typing for the diagnosis of Ankylosing Spondylitis, and B57 typing in the assessment of HIV positive patients suitability to receive the anti-retroviral drug Abacavir. We perform crossmatches against recipients by both flow cytometry and by complement-dependent cytotoxicity methods for deceased/living donors. We also provide anti-HLA antibody screening for patients that are on the transplant waiting list and as part of post-transplant monitoring of patients. Show less

This work was performed for my undergraduate research project. I spend my time in the crossmatch laboratory of the IBTS, where my work involved designing an External Quality Assessment Scheme for the assessment of laboratory performance and investigation of antibody eluates. The work involved contacting all Blood Transfusion laboratories in the Republic of Ireland to determine their practices in relation to antibody elution investigations, it involved the investigation of different antibodies to produce sensitised cells for use in an antibody equate EQA Scheme. Finally, a trial of the EQA Scheme was performed, where all participants were provided with 2 samples containing sensitised RBCs and had to report their results to me. I analysed all results and provided comprehensive result reports to each participant' The work I performed was chosen to be presented by myself at the British Blood Transfusion Society Annual Conference in Birmingham in October 2013, and an abstract of the work was published in Transfusion Medicine Journal. As a trainee, I was required to participate in a rotation around the 5 main disciplines in the Pathology Department. Each rotation was 5 weeks in length, with both an assessment and a written case study to be completed by the end of each rotation. Tutorials in Statistics were held once a week for all trainees. One week in the Irish Blood Transfusion Service was also included as part of the training in Transfusion Medicine.
