Thesis: Biology and Epidemiology of Banana Blood Disease. Banana Blood disease is a bacterial wilt caused by Ralstonia syzygii subsp. celebesensis. Blood disease was first encountered in 1905 in the Selayar Islands just south of Sulawesi. Quarantine was effective until 1987, since then the disease has been spreading to other islands in Indonesia and more recently to Malaysia. Blood disease is an emerging threat to banana production in Southeast Asia and beyond. Understanding the epidemiology and biology of the disease will lead to the development of more effective disease management strategies. Show less

NAQS was established to help address the unique quarantine risks facing northern Australia. As the Senior Pathologist, I was responsible for delivering the plant pathology program from Darwin. My role was to develop and lead the pathology surveillance, associated programs and diagnostic capability. My team regularly delivered surveys to the Ord River Irrigation Area in Western Australia (WA), outer Darwin rural area, Broome horticulture regions, coastal communities in the NT and NW WA, Timor-Lest and Indonesia. The group has a strong record of delivering plant health surveillance and training activities in Australia, Timor-Leste, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. Show less
