(Acting Aug - December 2017)The Vice-President Engagement is charged with leading innovative, strategic engagement activity that enhances the unique position and nature of ANU as standing deputy to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Global Engagement). The Strategic Communications and Public Affairs (SCAPA) division, International Strategy and Partnerships (ISP), and overseas liaison offices in China and North America report through to the VP ECA. The VP ECA is also the University’s Chief Corporate Affairs Officer.

Senior leadership of the corporate affairs function for the university, with an institution wide remit that incudes government, diplomatic, and community relations, internal and corporate communications, domestic and international media communications, public lectures and outreach, VIP visits and protocol. Undertook in 2013 a major restructure to modernize strategic communications, the success of which was given peer recognition when the team was named 2014 National In-House PR Team of the Year by the Public Relations Institute of Australia.

Counsellor (ANU), Director, North American Liaison Office,

Representing Australia and ANU overseas as Counsellor (ANU) at the Australian Embassy, Washington DC. Developed and implemented a North America Strategy that embraced activity across the University, encompassing both education and research. This included innovation and advancement, marketing, outreach and communications, alumni relations, commercialization and business development. In the role, successfully raised the profile of the University by establishing wide networks that resulted in new partnerships for the University, an MOU with the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, an active and now self-sustaining North American alumni network and a charitable foundation, as well as identifying and fostering new funding opportunities for ANU academic staff.

Reporting directly to the Vice-Chancellor and with a University-wide remit, leading a small team of seven who are responsible for the strategic management of University’s public affairs, including parliamentary and media relations, corporate communications, public lectures, VIP visits and protocol. Commenced as Media Manager in October 2005. Quickly promoted to a new role as Director of Communications and External Liaison, I was part of the team in the Vice-Chancellor's Office that won some $500M in Commonwealth Government funding between 2008 and 2010.

DFAT projects included writing press releases, speechwriting, editing, writing public relations materials and writing the final report for Ancient*Future-Australian Arts Festival Japan event management. Contracted to write press releases and publicity material for the Australia Japan Foundation and DETYA. A highlight was managing a showcase event for the Ancient*Future-Australian Arts Festival Japan - the opening event for the Patricia Piccinini exhibition, direct from the Venice Biennale, at the Hara Museum in Tokyo. The launch event was a success, attended by influential members of the Japanese art world and received high profile media coverage. Community Liaison Officer (part-time) Community welfare, settling in and out, general assistance with life in Japan for Embassy residents – some 180 people.
