Coordinator of a qualitative exposure study titled “Exploration of farming, health care and automotive manufacturing exposures and practices in relation to possible breast cancer risk”. Principal Funder: Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation – Ontario Chapter (CBCF). PI: Dr. Margaret Keith. Responsibilities included, securing the foundation funding for the duration of the project as well as ongoing solicitation of private donations. Also responsible for managing communication between principal researchers and research subjects as well as coordinating gathering of data and information with the goal of identifying conditions or practices --either past or current --that expose women to known or suspected carcinogens and/or endocrine disruptors in agricultural, health care, or automotive-related manufacturing settings. The study implemented individual and group informant interviews to gather information, through discussion of work practices, chemical use, and other factors, about women’s potential occupational or environmental exposures in three occupational categories of interest in various geographical locations within Essex and Kent counties. Responsibilities included preparing a grant application to secure funding for the project; establishing a network with local politicians, community stakeholders and related experts after funding was secured; coordinating volunteer facilitators in the community; recruiting focus group participants, holding focus groups and one-on-one interviews for information gathering using discussion and mapping; video-taping interviews, focus groups and related events for the production of a video reflecting the issues which arose within the community; transcription and coding of interviews; preparation of a video entitled “Double Exposure” and accompanying written report of the same name to be utilized by the community in an effort to continue to communicate pertinent issues including prevention of future breast cancer cases and other illnesses potentially related to rural work and life.
