      • Apr 1996 - Oct 1996

I worked for Shropshire County Council (SCC) for 7 years. My initial role was in waste management operations followed by a move into the regulatory section before transferring to the Environment Agency when the EA was established on 1st April 1996. In my operational role I was responsible for the design and installation of monitoring points around all the Councils landfill sites. I managed a team to monitor groundwater, leachate and landfill gas on both operational and closed sites and I was responsible for reporting the data and identifying mitigation measures where necessary. I managed the technical and QA requirements associated with lining landfill cells, which included; identification of suitable lining material; developing a testing regime; supervising liner installation; directing the sampling and testing of the liner as it was installed and interpreting the results. In my regulatory role I reviewed applications for planning permissions and waste management licences and assessed completion criteria for a number of major biodegradable landfill sites. I was responsible for approving landfill design and certification of materials suitable for use in landfill lining and capping works. I advised on all hydrogeological aspects of waste management with emphasis on migration of gas and leachate from landfill sites. I lectured on waste regulation, hydrogeology and lining systems for landfill to waste regulators within the Midlands region. During my period at SCC I undertook a research project on synthetic landfill liners. This research project was undertaken primarily in the USA where I visited manufacturers of synthetic liner and a number of sites where the material was being installed. At this time there was limited experience of synthetic liners in the UK and this research provided me, and my employer, with the knowledge and understanding to provide guidance to operators and regulators on the issues associated with these containment systems. I worked for Wardell Armstrong Consultants based in Leigh, Lancashire. As a graduate geologist I worked on a range of projects including site investigation works and site stabilisation works. This provided me with a wide variety of field experience including the management of contractors on site. As a young, female geologist that could be quite a challenge! This opportunity inspired me to focus on waste management as my career. I worked for Wardell Armstrong Consultants based in Leigh, Lancashire.
