As a classroom assistant, your job is to help prepare for class, assist the teachers during class, and cleaning up after class. When preparing for class, you'll be doing things like assembling visitor boxes, cutting out glue dots, cleaning dirty toys, and helping with anything the teacher might need to prepare supplies for a lesson. Right before and during class, you'll set up the room with the teacher, help write the class title on the board and put signs on the doors, sign in the child's parent or guardian, be a back of the line leader when the class goes to the gallery, sing the classroom songs, pass out supplies, answer questions or direct them to the teacher- in general, your role to support the teacher, students and parents with whatever they need. Once class ends, you will be in charge of gathering unused materials, throwing trash away, cleaning up art supplies, putting away toys, and putting anything that needs to be clean in the " yucky bucket" to be washed later. With your remaining downtime, you'll work on your internship project- to do this you'll need to do some reading about the teaching method the VMFA uses, write a paper on it, and plan a lesson. You'll have your whole internship to do these things, but it's important to find time to do them during your week, as it will take a long time to do. You may also be asked to help with other teacher's lesson plans, help identify paintings for the gallery tours, or put away library books used for class activities. Show less
