    • Lake Hayes / Waiwhakaata Strategic Board Representative
      • Jan 2021 - Present

I sit on this board representing as a voice for murihiku mana whenua. The Waiwhakaata / Lake Hayes Strategy Group was implemented by The Friends of Lake Hayes, Iwi, Otago Regional Council, Queenstown Lakes District Council and the Department of Conservation. The role of the group is to have strategic oversight of Lake Hayes and the greater Mill Creek Catchment. To work towards a better understanding of how to return the health of this water body back to mauri. Ultimately to develop a long term strategy to help manage the catchment. Lake Hayes (believe it or not) is a national asset. As a child; myself and many others used to swim here, there were record catches of perch back in the 1950's of over 1000 in a day. These days you wouldn't want to fall off your paddle board - due to the algal blooms and cyanobacteria. I joined this kaupapa as a voice for mana whenua, we see the cumulative effects that development, deforestation and increased nutrient rich sediment loads are having on the Lake. We see these effect ki uta ki tai. What is happening in our headwaters affects whānau and community from the mountains to the sea. Hiding... or diluting these effects does not solve anything... it masks it. If Lake Hayes can enter into a deteriorated state in 50 years... what will happen to our great lakes in the next 100 years? I strongly believe if we can return the mauri & health of this small lake it will act as a boost and create an understanding that we can deliver healthy alternatives and options to our great lakes.
