Startupbootcamp Smart Materials is Europe’s first business accelerator for materials. We believe the time has come to place emphasis on the invisible impact of the materials we come into contact with every day and to unleash their potential to innovate our health and lifestyle: from our food and liquid containers, to our houses and vehicles, to highly elaborate body implants. www.regmed.beThe province of Flemish Brabant and its neighbouring regions have a leading role in regenerative and personalised medicine research, translation, industrialisation, dissemination and clinical implementation and have a critical mass of complementary actors along the complete value chain. To maintain and strengthen this unique position a customised strategic innovation platform was established. The goal of this Regenerative Medicine Innovation Platform (RegMed) is to enable this emerging industry to generate added value for its regional actors and also to develop novel activities in the region.RegMed builds on its supporting community that includes stakeholders across the complete value chain and has set the following regenerative medicine aims:- White paper(s) for the region- Strategy for a multidisciplinary accelerator- Concepts for new business models- Start-up of follow-up projects- Start-up of concrete collaborations between community members- Set-up of an 'Open Access Lab' for collaborative proof-of-concept testing- Bring in new actors / customers- Dissemination, including the general public

www.bone4kids.beThe Bone4Kids Fund was established to round up resources for the research and treatment of non-healing fractures (pseudarthrosis) in children.Non-healing bone defects in children are the biggest nightmare for orthopaedic surgeons as treating these (very) young children always requires multiple surgical interventions throughout their childhood, including bone transplantations, without any guarantee for success.Amputation is often the only way out.Research team Prometheus at KU Leuven University has reached the last stage in the development of a new therapy which will dramatically reduce the number of surgical interventions. Our fund targets to help give this research the final push towards accomplishing its goal.Supported by the University Fund of the KU Leuven, scientists and parents have combined forces in an effort to raise the much needed funds.

First large scale Tissue Engineering project in FlandersGuided Bone EngineeringIWT-GBOU2003 - 2008The overall objective of this project is to gain substantial knowledge about guided bone regeneration, which is defined as the formation of new bone in the presence of artificial structures (inert, biodegradable or biologically activated) that contain bone- stimulating factors, in order to generate solutions for a patient- customised device for the healing of large defects in load-bearing bone, taking into account the life expectation of the patient. The long-term objective, based on the results of this project, is to kick-off Tissue Engineering research in Flanderswww.tissue-engineering.be
