  Context of the scientific work was knowledge representation and processing (AI). The major goal of the project was to verify theories about spatial concepts and processes used by humans when navigating within and communicating about space. For that purpose a virtual robot was build that was able to interpret textual route descriptions in natural language, build up an internal representation and use this internal model to navigate within an artificial environment. The application interface as well as the main knowledge representation and processing modules were written in Java. The text-interpretation module was written in Prolog and connected to the Java application via a C-based interface. The environment was based on a complex geometric framework developed earlier in the project to enable the needed geometric operations and conclusions. Show less
