My current research is a Fragment-Based Drug Discovery project where the target is the protein-protein interaction between Aurora A Kinase and the regulatory protein TPX2. This interaction is believed to be associated with cancer. Within the multi-disciplinary team, I, together with a team of medicinal chemists, design and synthesize small molecules, where they are then tested for how well they bind in the binding site of Aurora A. The medicinal chemistry team is responsible for analyzing and interpreting the data received back from collaborators to make further decision in terms or designing of new molecules and their progression down the drug discovery pipeline. I worked on the Anti-TB Drug Discovery project, as a part of the global HIT-TB consortium. Here I worked on small molecule design and synthesis, exploring structure-activity relationships with data feedback from collaborators within various scientific disciplines. The pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic data is also analyzed and interpreted to aid decision making. I worked on the Anti-TB Drug Discovery project, as a part of the global HIT-TB consortium. I worked on the Antimalarial Drug Discovery project, funded by Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV). Here I worked on small molecule design and synthesis, exploring structure-activity relationships with data feedback from collaborators within various scientific disciplines. The pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic data is also analyzed and interpreted to aid decision making. This project has led to the announcement of Africa's first clinical candidate, which went into clinical trials in early 2015. Show less
