Skill Hire is my 2nd work placement that I did as part of my practicum for youth work. My role in Skill Hire is mentoring young people who are coming to SkillHire to do certificates, pathway courses, apprenticeships and pre-apprenticeships and supporting them through the processes as well as engaging them in activities. Dismantle is my first work placement experience for youth work and it has been a good opportunity for me to develop my skills as an amateur youth worker. We go out on a 1 day per week in a 10 week program and take bikes with us for an engagement activity, we communicate with them whilst helping them build bikes. The first 5 weeks are for the first set of bikes, which once they are fully built, we send them off to charity and the other remaining 5 weeks, we bring the second set of bikes, and this time, the participants get to build and keep their own bike. Usually there are 2 youth workers in each programs in Dismantle but I was also on board iswell and before we head off to each session, we plan on how we want to run the day and who to talk to and who needs the most help. On our way back to Dismantle, we discuss how our session went and what to work on for next time, once we arrive, we unpack the tools, spare bike parts, park the vehicle on its place and do the session notes for the day.
