Employee in the Baby and Child department• Through working every weekend throughout my final year of university and permanently since graduating, I have learnt to balance my time, deal with regular travel as part of my routine and become self-sufficient• Gained an excellent grasp of customer service from working in an organisation where the customer is ‘always right’ and often demands much more from us than from competitors due to our reputation and high standards• A fascinating insight in a totally new and unfamiliar retail environment. It has given me a chance to consider retail strategy from the shop floor, from stock management to identifying customer trends• Regular experience working in different departments that are short-staffed has helped me to learn how to network within a large organisation, immediately form bonds with new co-workers and adapt to unfamiliar environments quickly• I have been given extra responsibilities at the store beyond my role on the shop floor, including using Salesforce for aftersales support to deal with both customers and manufacturers, implementing stock management plans and occasionally gaining managerial responsibilities

Maths and Science Teaching Intern

I was accepted onto a 4 week paid government scheme aimed at getting more maths and physics students interested in and aware of the opportunities available in teaching. During the placement at the science department of a secondary school in Birmingham, I was trained in various teaching techniques, observed lessons and most importantly, planned and taught lessons to students from throughout the school on topics ranging from evolution to electrical circuits. I felt it was also an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of many students, helping to inspire them to see the joy in learning about science and to be an example of the pathways available into university and beyond.
