I had the pleasure of working with Jamie at Colorado State University Global Campus. Jamie is particularly skilled at working with nontraditional students in online education settings. His deep passion for teaching and his excellent content knowledge shine through in his interactions with colleagues, administration, and students. Jamie's enthusiasm for learning translates well in his classes and he provides very hands-on guidance for adult learners. I am pleased to have had the opportunity to work with such a gifted educator. - Dr. Mel Shaw

Jamie has done a great job teaching online courses in the Biotechnology program at UMUC, as well as working with other faculty to revise and review existing courses. He is sensitive to students needs, and while firm and demanding, he also nurtures them. As such he is well-liked by his students and his colleagues. In brief Jamie has great teaching, organizational and management skills.

Merlin Science currently offers three courses - each targeted to a differed level of education, so you are sure to find something that meets your needs and satisfies your curiosity. Principles of Alchemy (Chemistry), Merlin's first course, is very popular among homeschoolers because it presents an important "foundation science" in a friendly and fun manner with minimal math. * Principles of Astronomy is also enjoyed by homeschoolers but is more popular among hobbyists and high schools. This course is a little more advanced than Principles of Alchemy (Chemistry) but still written at a level suitable for 8th grade reading skills. * Principles of Genetics is Merlin's most advanced course and is intended for university-level studies although it assumes only a minor amount of prior knowledge, so might be enjoyed by others looking for lessons in this fascinating area of Biology. Ensured that the open/flexible learning materials meet specific criteria, was logical in layout (following a clear learning path, with appropriate number of self-assessment questions and answers, activities and tutor marked assessments) and in a framework suitable for DTP (Desk Top Publishing) staff. Ensured that the materials were accurate (as both a peer-reviewer and proof-reader) and that the documentation was complete. Sole instructor for (1st year) “Genetics”, and assisted the labs for (2nd year) “Biochemistry” and (1st year) “Microscopy/Dissection”. Wrote and graded tests. Provided tutoring and counseling to students. Chairman of the Flexible Learning Committee. Lead development of the department's flexible (distance) learning modules. This role drew upon my Internet knowledge and my web-design skills as well as my experience with DTP and distance learning programs. We created materials to teach university students “Molecular Genetics”, “Immunology” and “Food Microbiology” as well as a series of booklets teaching “Biotechnology” to teachers (who then taught “Biotechnology” to their high school students). Coordinated the programs and worked with a variety of other instructors to produce high-quality learning materials both on the Internet and as books. Created a "virtual classroom environment" for student support over the Internet (using a software package called “FirstClass”). Created a business plan to start a Medical School catering to US students (based upon the overall concept of “Caribbean Medical Schools” but to British standards). Show less
