In a new role at SIRT I'm working in research and training, my focus pertaining to Virtual Production with a specialization in Unreal Engine and it's use in ICVFX (in camera visual effects.) I recently led facilitation and development for the "On Set Unreal Technician" course as part of SIRT's first-of-it's-kind Micro Credential in Virtual Production; In Partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery Access, we developed and held a 12 week program for professionals looking to re-tool into this new and exciting field. I'm working to build a strong base of UE knowledge within the research centre to help support our activities and grow the collective knowledge of industry; Supplying subject matter expertise on Virtual Production and the role that game engine technology can play. During a secondment to the research centre, it was my responsibility to manage the technical Day to Day of the facility. Working with our stake holders, clients and research teams, i supported infrastructure and a dozen teams/projects simultaneously. Areas of work included: Film Production Motion Capture (facial and full body) Server Administration (File, Data, Archive, Licensing across platforms: mac, PC, Ubuntu) Render farm set up and administration (Qube, Houdini) Network administration Hardware troubleshooting (from specialized equipment to building customs PCs) Confluence server (set up, development and administration) Integration of various technologies into our ecosystem and the overall management of SIRTs fleet of equipment and technologies. I liked to say that it was my job to make sure the research staff could focus on research, and not have to worry about anything else. Under the guidance of Sifu Augustine Ngu, we started the Program in 2009. It has grown to about 50 students in two classes (ages 5-8, and 9+) Currently, I am not actively teaching here, but instead, helping guide the next generation of instructors by offering coaching, and guidance as they take over the classes and have the oppertunity to grow themselves.
