After returning to MagNET, funding changes meant that it, and all the other evaluation centres, were funded by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). The role involved type-testing MRI systems and producing reports for the NHS and continuing to provide consultancy services such as MRI acceptance tests and presenting in training courses in MRI safety and QA. I was able to undertake some research projects, specifically in developing image analysis software in IDL, particularly for assessing spatial resolution through the modulation transfer function. Further funding changes resulted in MagNET being funded by the NHS Purchasing and Supply Agency as part of their evidence-based purchasing scheme.

My role at Barts and the London NHS Trust, as it was in 1998, saw the start of my Grade B training under the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine's training scheme. My role was split between the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, where I was part of the small physics team offering physics support in the Nuclear Medicine Department, and St Bartholomew's Hospital, where I performed diagnostic radiology tests on the hospital's diagnostic imaging systems. MagNET was a device evaluation centre for magnetic resonance imaging systems. It was based at Imperial College, London, and was funded, at the time, by the Medical Devices Agency (MDA). MagNET's aims were to type-test new medical imaging equipment as it came onto the UK market and provide evaluation reports to the NHS detailing the absolute performance of the system, and its relative performance to other, comparable MRI systems. The role involved travelling to MRI manfacturers' test sites around Europe to perform type tests with standard MRI test objects and compiling evaluation reports for publication to the NHS. MagNET also provided consultancy services, including performing acceptance tests on new MRI system installations within the UK and Republic of Ireland.

I gained the position of Grade A Trainee Medical Physicist, undergoing the training scheme of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM). My training was based at the Royal United Hospital, Bath, under the direction of Professor Frances Duck, but included extended placements at Dorset County Hospital, Dorchester, and Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Poole. My main training subjects were in radiotherapy, nuclear medicine and ultrasound, with acquaintance training in diagnostic radiology, medical lasers and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). I passed the IPEM postgraduate diploma with merit in July 1997.
