Trainee Building Surveyor (Work Placement)
-
Jun 2015 - Sep 2015
Welling Partnership offered me a summer placement in between my second and third year of my degree. My role was to assist Chartered Building Surveyors on their various duties including; Site Inspections, Valuations, Measured Surveys, Building Surveys and Party Wall Inspections. I was also responsible for recording minutes at progress meetings and snagging / de-snagging properties before handing them over to the client. My Managing Partner prepared a number of development exercises for me based on live projects. One exercise included; preparing Tender Drawings, Specification, Schedules of Work and a Cost Estimate for a client who wanted her semi-detached house externally cladded. Another exercise was to prepare a JCT Minor Works Contract for a Chimney Re-Build project in Kensington, London. My Managing Partner set a number of different scenarios which allowed me to prepare monthly Valuations, issue Payment Certificates, prepare various Contract Instructions and review an application for an Extension of Time and grant the appropriate amount of days that the Contractor was entitled too.

Trainee Building Surveyor (Work Placement)
-
Sep 2011 - May 2013
I was offered 3 days a week work placement by Welling Partnership whilst I was studying at Eastleigh College. I was given the opportunity to shadow Chartered Building Surveyors on their day to day duties which included; progress meetings, site inspections, monthly valuations, measured and condition surveys. The projects I shadowed varied between sizes from a simple two storey house extension to a 62 Unit Re-development Senior Care Scheme. I had the opportunity to witness different construction techniques used, varying from masonry construction to timber and steel frame construction. I was also set various tasks such as carrying out a measured survey of Welling's Southampton office which was then drawn to scale using AutoCAD. I was also given a number of drawing exercises including; building elevations, plans, sections and drainage runs.
