Contributed in setting up, running and coaching at school tournaments across South Wales, ages ranging from Year 7-11. This required me to - Set all pitches up with appropriate equipment needed for training and playing e.g. cones, balls, touch flags - Be organised and make sure every team was on their allotted pitch for the set kick off time -Make sure my time management was equal to all teams in the tournament, to give each squad as much coaching time as possible as the majority of players were experiencing their first ever game - Coach the basic fundamentals that were easy to learn and could help teams in their fixtures e.g. putting three men in the tackle, lying on the tackler when on the floor and not letting him play the ball quickly, 2 v 1 and 3 v 2 handling drills - Keep track of scores and point difference to determine mathematical winners of the pool stages Show less

This placement involved going into schools in the Blues community region, delivering stimulating, active sessions to primary school children teaching them the fundamental skills of rugby. I used the skills developed from my previous coaching role to be the main leader among the teachers, delegating coaches to various skill stations or games they were most suited for. Much like with the coaching in the Dragons region, the term consisted of spending the first few weeks getting an idea of the ability of the children by performing very basic, hand-eye coordination games, progressively building up the complexity of the sessions every week till they were competent enough to play mini games of tag rugby by the end of term. I also helped run half term rugby camps at Cardiff Arms Park. Requiring me to: - Set up equipment early in the morning and help take registration - Provide enjoyable, challenging sessions from ages ranging from Under 7- U13's - Be able to enhance the skill level of young players and teach them the fundamental skills of the game - Coach sessions to large groups individually - Help teach basic movement and running mechanics Show less

My role was to support the Head S&C coach in pre season screening and testing. With rugby being my sport and having a familiarity with common pre season screening exercises, I was able to be self sufficient, competently taking groups of players away for screening tests to assess their current state of physical readiness, making sure any injuries or significant asymmetries were highlighted and brought to the coaches attention before the pre season training starts to avoid injury. I was also responsible for: - Conducting initial fitness tests and collecting data - Setting up and putting away equipment when required - Taking warm ups, activation sessions and cool downs - One to one rehab work with injured players Show less

This placement involved working in a semi-professional sporting environment for one of the most historic names in Welsh rugby. With a large amount of my experiance to this point being in coaching or fitness, this placement required taking myself out of my comfort zone into an area I didn't have a lot of knowledge in. The main role I had on this placement was recording training sessions and midweek games to monitor individual and team performances, as well as playing trends. I quickly became competent at coding and was able to perform in game analysis very early on, being able to record player's input using Sportscode, later to be converted into concise, comparable data to asses the individuals overall performance. This placement did not only teach me a new skillset that teams and athletes see as being vital to success in modern sport, but also gave me an understanding of the physical demands of the game at semi professional level, allowing me to objectively break down individuals performances, providing me data to compare to others in that position, highlighting areas of weakness for that player to target, and the type of physical training needed in order to improve that athlete. This placement was about going into schools in the Dragons community region, delivering stimulating, active sessions to primary school children teaching them the fundamental skills of rugby. This was the first time I had worked with school children and relished the opportunity to take myself out of my comfort zone and learn how to become an effective community coach. At the start of term we would spend the first few weeks getting an idea of the ability of the children by performing very basic, hand-eye coordination games, gradually building up the complexity of the sessions over the term until they were competent enough to play mini games of tag rugby by the end of term. Our other aim was to run a mini tag tournament at the end of the year between all the four schools we were teaching at. This enhanced our ability to not only be good coaches, but effective leaders, needing to be organised, proactive and have good problem solving ability, not being afraid to improvise on the spot.
