I have worked with and for James on several occasions in divers situations. I found him to be honest , precise with a clear focus on some difficult & complex situations. I recommend James to any potential client and would welcome the opportunity work with him again.
Dominic Christie-Brown
James is a very commercial solicitor. He can be relied upon to take a sensible approach to any situation and, whilst he is an expert in insolvency and banking law, his ability to see outside the law and into commercial realities is second to none. He is intelligent and very personable. He is always a pleasure to work with.

gunnercooke is a challenger law firm and one of the fastest growing in the UK. We are a full-service, corporate and commercial firm with over 130 partners. We aim to challenge, improve and evolve the way that legal services are delivered to businesses, through building an environment that enables our lawyers to deliver great service. We always seek to be innovative where it benefits our clients and our lawyers. Our firm was created to allow our lawyers to play to their strengths, and to focus their priorities on what they are good at and what they enjoy, in order that they can deliver the first class service our clients expect and deserve. We do not have the overwhelming baggage of some law firms – we are not weighed down by time sheets or targets of any kind internally, and consequently our lawyers’ complete focus is to serve our clients’ best interests. Above all, we thrive and are passionate about developing strong relationships with our clients and a deep understanding of their businesses so that the service and support we provide is focused, efficient and meets their needs. I set up Nicholls & Co. to provide the best insolvency and restructuring service possible. We intend to win new instructions and clients based on recommendation and reputation. We believe that a specialist practice is better placed to provide what clients require when faced with difficult and challenging times. Jan 2006 - Feb 2010
Patient First went bust in February 2010. This means I have now worked on just about every angle of going bust. I have worked for IPs, worked in the bank, and done the legals. I have now been at the sharp end as a director of a company in trouble. The turnaround we were effecting could not happen quickly enough and sufficiently to avoid an insolvency procedure. We organised a very good pre-pack administration and again saved 120 jobs and kept the business going. Not ideal but the best result in the circumstances and a very relevant learning experience for me. JN Show less

Stoys was one of the original insolvency practices and in fact still felt like "The University of Insolvency". The early nineties were incredibly busy with the Banks appointing receivers like confetti. Interesting times in hotel receiverships, early CVAs and Administrations. Also closing all those old pre-86 Act cases. Stoys was one of the original insolvency practices and in fact still felt like "The University of Insolvency".
