Miranda D.

James was co-teaching a class I took in spring 2019. Before class had even begun, I was impressed with his ability to communicate kindly and effectively about difficult subjects. During the course, I came to find James to be trustworthy and his facilitation made it comfortable and easy to open up in class about matters that were personal, and often emotionally charged. James also took the time to be supportive in ways outside of the curriculum which was pleasantly unexpected and led me to believe he truly cared about how he could help his students. The class, teachers and fellow students made a lasting impression on me that I hope lasts a lifetime.

I have had the joy of getting to collaborate with James on various projects over the years, most recently—and most notably—as co-facilitators with Communities for Change, a project of the Impact Hub and MIT's Presencing Institute. James was the glue that held our team together. He consistently showed up first and left last, and remained thoughtful, open, engaging and curious with difficult content and tight timelines. His understanding of complex systems thinking and permaculture design helped to guide the work that we did, and helped the participants reach new levels of inquiry. When faced with an obstacle (which is inevitable in piloting a program) he not only rolled with the punches with ease and grace, he brought a sense of levity, humor and humanness to the process. I am grateful to have him as a co-collaborator, and I look forward to getting to work with him in the future.
