Senior Cadet Engineer

Jul 2022 - Present
As a Senior Cadet Engineer I am working in Bathurst Regional Council's Technical Services section. In this role I am focusing on further developing my skills and proficiency in project management and contract administration of Capital Works projects up to and greater than $1 million in value. Available to me are a variety of other opportunities for development of practice and gaining experience in design of roads, small structures, stormwater infrastructure and other general works. I am directly developing estimates, requests for quotes (RFQ), Project Specific Requirements (PSR), Statements of Environmental Effects (SoEE), and will be overseeing delivery of works on site.

I elected to complete my second engineering cadet industry placement with Bellingen Shire Council to diversify my experience in different settings of civil engineering industry. I have been offered an excellent variety of opportunities for gaining experience & participating in engineering design & project management for stormwater, roads & bridges projects. I have been involved in projects for a new boat ramp & a helipad facility at a higher level, directly managing project scoping, planning, tender development & management, stakeholder engagement, preliminary costing, & technical concept design development. I have been involved with scoping, planning & authoring over 20 grant applications for various Council assets in need of renewal &/or replacement under the following programs: - Fixing Country Bridges Round 2 - Recreational Fishing Trust - Recreational Camping & Fishing Facilities - NSW Boating Now Round 4 I completed site inspections & engaged numerous high level stakeholder representatives from Transport for NSW & the DPI to develop strong interpersonal relationships & ensure high quality applications were submitted by Council. All applications were successfully submitted on time. I have helped secure $89,786 in funding towards Council projects from these applications so far, adding real value to my host organisation through my work. I completed a Concept Design Investigation & Report for Bellingen Council for the New Mylestom Boat Ramp Project for my Engineering Cornerstone Thesis. This highly complex multidisciplinary project involves technical scoping & investigation, planning & technical concept design for the new boat ramp facility including geometric layout, traffic movement planning & compliance. I am also completing early stage engineering project management activities. I delivered a technical concept design & associated report that empowers Council to make informed decisions for next stages of technical design development.

Sep 2020 - Jul 2021
Working with TfNSW Maintenance & Delivery West based in Dubbo, NSW, this was my first yearlong industry placement in the CSU Engineering program. The role emphasised civil engineering project management, giving exposure to and experience participating in planning and managing delivery of projects such as: - Newell Highway Mitchell Highway Intersection Upgrade project - New Dubbo Bridge Enabling Works Access Track & Crane Working Platform project - Dunedoo Heavy Vehicle Enforcement Station construction project - Castlereagh Culvert Repair project - various maintenance projects - Great Western Highway / Kelso-Raglan Upgrade Project On the Newell-Mitchell project I was placed under the supervision of the project engineer and acted in the capacity of a Surveillance Officer or Works Supervisor, performing regular inspections of works being delivered and reviewing works completed for compliance from October 2020 to March 2021. A strong eye for detail led to me spotting and raising a series of serious non-conformance issues that required rectification works. My actions secured better project outcomes for the client, TfNSW. From the 1st March 2021 I assisted the Dubbo Maintenance Engineer with various projects mentioned above. This greatly increased my direct exposure to and participation in project delivery planning, scoping and tender development for different works. I gained valuable knowledge in contract development for material supply, stormwater drainage construction/maintenance, trench drains and kerb & gutter construction. I also developed detailed information packages for culvert construction and maintenance crews to use in the field. I completed a two-day Erosion & Sediment Control Planning course to further my professional development and enhance my utility to TfNSW. This broad exposure deepened my understanding of road design, construction & maintenance, drainage design, etc. and engineering project management.

Sep 2017 - Sep 2020
I was employed at Bunnings Warehouse in various capacities and departments from September 2017 to September 2020. During this time I worked Full-Time, Part-Time and Casual roles as a Team Member in the Lifestyles, Homewares and Goods-Inwards departments at various stores, primarily Bunnings Belrose. Working as a Team Member requires a dynamic approach to your workplace as you have to serve and interact with customers whilst also proactively manage stock levels both on the shelf and in reserve. I really enjoyed the freedom to show initiative at work, freely able to go out into the delivery yard and re-organize the arrangements of pallets of stock to make priority items easier to access. This keeps the workplace dynamic and interesting, as there is always something to do or be improved. I received training to operate a Wave (work assist vehicle) and an electric pallet jack during my employment.

General Laborer/Construction Laborer
-
Dec 2016 - Feb 2017
I spent the summer laboring for my uncles friend on a brown-fields house construction. I wanted to see what a real Monday to Friday job is like and develop a first-hand understanding of challenges faced by construction workers and builders when trying to implement and realise the designs and concepts of engineers/architects in the dynamic and changeable environment of an active construction site. My experiences provided me valuable insights and knowledge that will help me be a better engineer/architect, as the perspectives offered will help ground me in user-end design considerations in future when working as an engineer. Working as a laborer helped develop my people skills, team-working skills, resilience to criticism/abuse (builders don't mince words!) and practical problem solving skills. It was also a humbling experience that taught me a lot about earned mutual respect. It was a fantastic opportunity and learning experience that offered invaluable insight into the construction and delivery of engineering design.
