I worked with James from September 2018 to August 2019. During that time he was involved with a wide variety of marketing and communication activities. I was impressed by how quickly he got up to speed, especially given the many facets of our work. He produced work of high quality and showed great initiative, balanced by the ‘right level’ of checking he was on the right track. Because he could be relied on to do a great job with minimal supervision, he was able to take on more challenging tasks earlier than I’d expected. James fitted into the team with ease and has kept up with many of us since leaving. He was excellent before he started his masters, and I’m sure he will have developed even further as a result of it. I thoroughly recommend him to a future employer.

James is a rare talent and a key ally for anyone working in comms. I worked alongside James for one year in a small marketing team - his first role after graduating university. It was a period of intense change and innovation for the organisation, with new demands and opportunities placed upon our team on a frequent basis. Despite these circumstances, James got to grips with his role exceptionally quickly, expertly navigating the nuance to our organisation in a manner you would expect of someone vastly more experienced. Within a very short period of time, James was leading his own projects and developing effective solutions with a zeal that invigorated the team. James has a very broad skill set, but his ability to produce flawless, natural copy that resonates with a reader is extraordinary. Coupled with his enterprising attitude and strong grasp on content strategy, he is an asset to any customer-focused organisation. James left us to pursue a MA in Public Relations and Communications - a course which will only have strengthened his skills. I have no trouble recommending him and continue to wish him the very best in his endeavours.

I assumed the position of Editor of The Edge after a year as a section editor. Run as part of the University of Southampton, The Edge is the only entertainment focused student magazine in the country, reporting on music, live gigs, film and television. The role was also a Student Leader position within SUSU, the Students’ Union, giving me additional responsibilities on the Media Committee and the Creative Industries and Democracy Zone for the university. I was successful in an election process with over 1,000 students voting on my role alone.I led a committee of 14 student volunteers in overseeing the magazine’s online and print outputs. This included communicating to around 300 writers and 5,000 readers in Southampton and beyond. Under my leadership, The Edge published seven full issues, and online content daily via our website www.theedgesusu.co.uk. My first move as Editor was to rebrand the logo, rework the Facebook and Twitter pages, and completely redesign the print issue ahead of Freshers’ in September 2017.
