This "Infiltration Station" consisting of multiple layers of porous media was originally created with the intent of being implemented in the Lake Atitlan basin of Guatemala, an area suffering from high rates of environmental degradation due to lack of appropriate maintenance of wastewater; however, we implemented our first system in Chocola, Guatemala with edible plants around the system to nurture a thriving rhizosphere. Further research was conducted and a second system was implemented and tested at UC Davis for improvements in our initial design. We believed that a household-level greywater reuse treatment system would increase the quality of life through the protection of ecosystem services and drinking water supplies through pollution reduction. Additionally, through water reuse our project had the potential to decrease overall water consumption and provided families in the community with nutritional food. Results were presented in Washington D.C. at the National Sustainable Design Expo.
