The following years involved research that led to a PhD from the Physics department at Imperial College London. My research project investigated new light emitting materials for organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), and was a multi-disciplinary project involving chemistry, photophysics, material science, and optoelectronics. My project is connected to the Centre for Plastic Electronics (CPE), of which further information can be found at www3.imperial.ac.uk/plasticelectronics. Show less

This required the analysis of a variety of important scale up principles for chemical processes, including throughput, safety, and environmental considerations. It was important to have a broad knowledge in chemical synthesis, analytic techniques, environmentally friendly processes, in addition to basic concepts in chemical engineering and the economic viability of chemical manufacturing processes. The major projects I was involved in included developing new processes for scaling up or scaling out synthetic reactions in microwave reactors, and an investigation into new scale up processes for one of the company's major selling drugs. During my time at the company, I contributed to the following publications: - The application of Stop-Flow Microwave Technology to Scaling-Out SnAr Reactions Using a Soluble Organic Base (Marafie, J., A.; Moseley, J. D.; Org. Biomol. Chem., 2010, 8, 2219–2227) - A Commercial Continuous Flow Microwave Reactor Evaluated for Scale-Up (Bergamelli, F.; Iannelli, M; Marafie, J. A.; Moseley, J. D.; Org. Process Res. Dev., 2010, 14, 926–930) Show less
