During the intensive field course, Field Research in Tropical Ecology (ENVS 344), I instruct a diverse group of students on the process of performing high quality ecological research though hands-on experience. American students from the Drexel Study Abroad Program are partnered with Equatoguinean students from the National University of Equatorial Guinea to develop, plan, perform, and report research projects at the Moka Wildlife Center, in southern Bioko Island. Projects have focused on a variety of ecological and wildlife topics, including the impacts of agricultural practices, hunting activities, and development on a wide variety of taxa, including local vegetation, invertebrates, birds, amphibians, and mammals. During the course, I teach students how to apply the scientific method to develop and answer pertinent research questions, using an array of traditional and novel techniques. Ultimately, my goal as instructor is for students to not only become better scientists, but for them to also contribute to our understanding of the ecology, behavior, and conservation on Bioko Island.
