I spent 2 weeks working at a GP surgery in Bradford. I was able to shadow GPs during their surgeries, witnessing patient doctor interactions in addition to basic examinations. I also sat in on baby clinics, allowing me to learn the medical examinations done on babies aged 6-8 weeks when they first come to the surgery. Whilst on my experience, I also carried out audits on diabetic recalls, picking out patients with diabetes who had not been called in for an annual diabetic review. I was required to go through patient records to find the reason why they had not been called in and then contact patients to book them in for appointments for their diabetic recall if needed. I was taught how to navigate patient records, looking at past entries from doctors, letters from external bodies and blood test results.

    • Core funding allocation team
      • Jul 2017 - Jul 2017

I was chosen to be a part of a team of 3 students to make up the university's core funding allocation team for the University of Nottingham's Student Union. We were given a budget of £110,000 to divide between all societies at the university who had submitted a core funding application form. We were required to read over each societies form, which stated the requested amount and what it would be spent on. We then decided collectively how much to allocate to the society based on their request, number of active members, current bank balance and expected income over the next academic year.

    • Work experience - anaesthetics
      • Jun 2017 - Jun 2017

I spent a week within the anaesthetics department at QMC shadowing doctors and consultants. I was able to obtain a hands on experience of working life within a hospital, also being able to witness various operations first hand. I was present in the anaesthetic room while patients were being prepared for surgery, being educated on the various drugs given, for pain as well as anaesthetic purposes, depending on the procedure. I was also taught about the equipment used, mainly tracheal and tracheostomy tubes and how they were inserted depending on the procedure. I was also able to observe an array of surgeries, both laparoscopic and open surgery, being educated on how to monitor BP and HR as well as administer drugs throughout.

I took part in a programme to gain medical work experience in Tanzania. I spent my first week working on a paediatric ward and the second on the obstetrics and gynaecology ward. In my first week I was able to do rounds with the doctors, allowing me to see a wide variety of cases, both in children and adults. I aided nurses in the paediatric burns ward with changing bandages and measuring blood pressure as well as taking temperatures. In my second week, I witnessed a number of births, both natural and by C section. Being in theatre on some days allowed me to also see various other operations.
