The Equalization Department advises and assists the County Board of Commissioners in equalizing property tax assessments across townships and cities in Houghton County. We maintain property tax record cards, digital records, digital and paper maps, GIS maps for the County, and other State of Michigan forms. We maintain databases of compiled data using BS&A and Laredo software. We categorize and analyze sales data from deeds and other property transfer documents, conducting two year sales and one year appraisal studies meeting State of Michigan guidelines and laws. We assist local and county treasurers and assessors with assessment and tax roll preparation. We assist local municipalities with State of Michigan form L-4029 and other annual forms. And we coordinate various programs and directives between the Michigan State Tax Commission and Department of Treasury with local unit assessors, townships, cities, and villages. Show less
