      I studied the genetics of aging using Drosophila fruit flies and participated in several different projects. My main project involved marking the mitochondria of the adult fly with a green fluorescent protein and quantifying the fluorescence using synchronized high-speed video cameras. We then used custom software to analyze the videos and calculate the fluorescence for each fly as a measure of the total mitochondrial content. We hypothesized that the more mitochondria the fly had, the longer the fly will live. Additionally, I worked with a graduate student to generate the figures and graphs from our results which we then presented to our peers. Show less
