UK WASHable International was initially born from the World Merit community. The Merit360 event, hosted in New York in 2016, brought together 360 individuals from over 85 countries, and allowed the founders to collaborate in developing the initial ideas surrounding water and sanitation related projects. United by a common passion for SDG6, 22 youth leaders came together at Merit360 in New York in 2016. The project currently consists of a solar distillation plant, operating along the shores of Lake Victoria in Kenya, where clean distilled water is freely distributed to a local school. The first full scale model was established following a visit to Kenya in 2015, where a fish farming enterprise also operates within the ponds beneath the distillation structure. There are also plans to incorporate a greenhouse element into the current design, and integrate this scheme with other sanitation projects. Another model was recently established in Malawi, including new designs and plans to expand this further within the country. With severe health problems and food shortages in the surrounding regions, the JuaMaji project aims to help improve the wellbeing of the local population, including the funding of 10 students at a local secondary school. This project has allowed me to use entrepreneurial action to innovate and develop solutions to global problems; effectively managing a multi-disciplinary team through all project stages from inception to implementation and expansion. I gained exposure to the multidisciplinary nature of projects and the time frames within which these were delivered, improving my understanding of the requirements for such a role within an international consultancy. Participation and contribution to project meeting discussions and workshops was essential, including effective collaboration with other staff members for successful project outcomes. Additional research into EIA and other topics also provided assistance to other colleagues in the environment team. Show less
