Research Assistant - Department of Geography
-
Jan 2013 - Mar 2013
Jacylyn provided research support to two Geography Professors as they looked to critically analyze how immigration reform was impacting care-workers. Care-workers have a large population of undocumented persons, often called "an invisible workforce." She went through major newspapers and media outlets as well as localized newspapers, blogs, and even testimonials for advocacy groups like SEIU and Casa Latina in Seattle. She organized the materials using the cataloging software, Zotero, so that the professors could easily navigate through and determine the most evocative material. The article is still under review by the "Journal of Progress in Human Geography." Show less

Resident Counselor Coordinator
-
Aug 2009 - Aug 2012
Jacylyn worked at a 6-7 day leadership camp for middle school students that was created by the Association of Washington Student Principals. She began her partnership with this organization as a delegate of the camp and returned as a counselor and then counselor coordinator in the subsequent years. As a counselor, she was in charge of motivating and cultivating leadership in young people so that they could create a culture of service once they returned to their schools. She was in charge of facilitating lessons and team-building of around 15 middle school students with the help of a teacher counselor. As a counselor coordinator, she helped create a full day of leadership building for the 25-30 counselors who volunteered at the camp in order to better prepare them for work with the teacher counselors and student delegates. She also set agendas so that counselors were well informed for days that would often exceed the typical 9-5 job. She allowed counselors the opportunity to self-lead as well as created opportunities for counselors to lead one another on various projects. Jacylyn learned the importance of servant leadership in this position and also that leadership has to be fostered and empowered to create a legacy of service. Show less
