My responsibilities included the chemical synthesis, and subsequent purification and analysis of novel tetracyclines. These compounds were then tested on mouse models to determine their efficacy in treating the orphan disease SMA (spinal muscular atrophy). I was the first research intern that Paratek took on, but by the end of my tenure there, they had expanded the program to almost a dozen research interns.
