I worked within the Thoracic Medicine Department, my role was to assist and learn from the scientists through conducting a wide array of investigation tests. This included Spirometry, Gas analysis, Static lung volume measurements, muscle pressure tests, high altitude simulation tests, Mannitol challenge and skin prick tests. Other test I assisted with included six minute walk test and cardiopulmonary Exercise test. I also observed sleep study tests and multiple procedures in the bronchoscopy department. I was commended on my ability to work confidently and appropriately with patients, and my capability to learn and apply the technical components of the testing early on in my placement. This solidifies that I can adapt to and acquire new skills quickly. I also pursued the opportunity to participate in the pulmonary rehabilitation program run by Physiotherapists. This experience improved my clinical judgment skills and helped me solidify the relationship between airway disease pathology and the appropriate exercise interventions.

This is a multidisciplinary clinic comprised of Physiotherapist and Exercise Physiologist, the clinic has its own private facility with treatment rooms and fully equipped gym. I acquired further exposure by treating patients diagnosed with a wide variety of conditions - including musculoskeletal, cardiac, pulmonary, neurological, and cancer. My responsibilities were; exercise screening of new patients, functional capacity assessment, exercise prescription and delivery (both gym and home based), and objectively monitoring patients’ and responding accordingly. I also conducted hydrotherapy classes. I specifically commended on my ability and understanding of how to work with neurologically impaired patients.

Enhanced Health is a business run completely by Accredited Exercise Physiologist. They operated from public gyms offering its services to Various Medicare, DVA, private patients and more. During my time here, I travelled between multiple locations across the sunshine coast. Accumulated hours were mostly 1 on 1 sessions others were small group sessions of 4-8 people. Through this placement I had the opportunity to work with patients with a diverse range of musculoskeletal conditions, largely chronic in nature. This provided opportunities to build rapport with patients whilst using clinical reasoning skills to provide the most appropriate exercise.

My role included exercise rehabilitation for a range of cardiac and pulmonary conditions. This involved cardiac testing and interventions, exercise prescription and programming, exercise delivery, and patient education. I had the opportunity of working within an excellent multidisciplinary team which included Exercise Physiologists, Nurses, Occupational Therapists, and other health educators. Through this I was able to enhance my ability to work cohesively in a team. As I progressed through this placement, my knowledge surrounding coronary interventions and the associated effects was strengthened. Considering the diversity of the group environment I was also able to enhance my more advanced skills in clinical measurements such as measuring manual blood pressure during exercise.
