As a student journalist at the Winooski News, I work with a small team of student journalists and professional editors to cover Winooski, VT. Our E-Newspaper is the only publication devoted solely to covering the city. As a beat reporter, I cover Winooski schools, businesses, city elections, voting, COVID-19, and any other newsworthy items impacting residents. I feel rewarded every time I produce a story for this informed and engaged city. Organized support for Ned Lamont's gubernatorial campaign in the Farmington Valley, worked with local Democratic Town Committees to run phone banking and canvassing events, and utilized networks of local students and community members to recruit volunteers. Through our organizing and the help of dozens of local volunteers, voter turnout increased by 2,569: improving Democratic margins by 2.6 points and flipped the town of Simsbury from red to blue. As a field organizing intern, I helped coordinate phone banks, made calls to voters, and knocked on doors. By the end of the summer, I learned how to divide turf using NGP van and other administrative functions through my coworkers, and gained an appreciation for the importance of door-to-door outreach.
