As part of my masters degree, I carried out a 5 month work placement with Cumnor Construction Ltd. I was based in Cork University Hospital where Cumnor undertook the project to build a new blood sciences laboratory and carry out refurbishment works to much of the existing blood sciences building. The biggest benefits of working on site, have been seeing the theory from the degree modules put into practice and getting the opportunity to engage with industry professionals. I have been extremely fortunate to work on a project that involves an array of engineering disciplines. My technical skills learned in college have improved greatly as a result of my time on site however, I have found that the ability to work as part of a team is by far the most important skill learned over the course of my degree. I regularly interact with engineers and professionals from other disciplines, be it whether they are part of the design team, subcontractors on site or hospital staff and clientele. Cumnor’s project structure has benefited me greatly. Due to the number of subcontractors they hire, I have been afforded a great opportunity to meet and learn from people employed in a wide variety of roles. I witnessed works relating to many of my degree modules and my understanding of these modules was improved by my exposure to the real world applications of the theory. This was an opportunity many of my classmates working from home were unlucky to miss out on.I have benefitted greatly from the responsibility placed upon me by my employer and co-workers. The responsibility placed upon me, and the confidence shown in me has attributed to substantial growth in both my ability and confidence.
