I have worked with Jack in IONA (later Progress) between 2004 and 2009. Initially we worked on a mobile middleware product, later on a repository product. Jack mostly worked on the UI side of things. Initially the UI's were Eclipse-based, later the UI's were GWT / AJAX based. Beside being an excellent developer, Jack always focuses highly on the usability of the UI's. This way he produces product of exception quality and end user experience. Besides that, Jack is a really good all-round Java developer as well, who can implement anything required, even if its not a UI. I highly recommend working with Jack!

With Flow I have designed and implemented API driven services using technologies such as Play Framework with Scala, API Builder, PostgreSQL and Kubernetes running on AWS. These are part of a micro-services architecture, with each service publishing and consuming pertinent event data using Amazon Kinesis. The projects I have worked on include: Financial Systems * Provides internal API's and tooling for our finance team. * Generates financial reports for our division using data received over Kinesis. Merchant Onboarding Performing automated validation of setup for merchants onboarded from our partner Shopify. Checkout (codenamed Blaze) This is a performant checkout process with a React frontend communicating using a custom protocol over websockets managed using Akka actors. Information such as taxes and duties due are calculated as early as possible server side and communicated to the front end such that the user experiences no delays during the checkout process. Product Feeds This service ingests product catalog data, augmenting it with information relevant to international marketing such as localized pricing and shipping costs, and publish feeds to platforms including Google and Facebook. Flows' customers simply connect to one or more marketing platforms, select the countries where they wish to market their products, and the service handles all 3rd party interaction. Show less

Implemented and deployed a data delivery service that aggregates data from several upstream sources. The consumers include the MySaks personalized homepage and HBC's mobile shopping apps. The service: * Is written in Scala * Runs on http4s * Provides a GraphQL based query API using the Sangria library * Uses the cats, Monix and circe libraries * Publishes metrics to Prometheus * Publishes request tracing information to Jaeger * Is deployed on AWS using Kubernetes and ArgoCD Show less

Some highlights from my contributions at Workday include: * Performing a redesign and rewrite of the API and implementation layers of the Document Storage Service in Scala. * Replacing a cumbersome Ant build and packaging system for approx 50 libraries of the ESB codebase with a Gradle based one. * Implementing a HTTP proxy service to provide authentication/authorization and request forwarding to the Datameer Big Data platform. Developed in Scala, it also used HTTP Servlets and an Open Source HTTP Proxy Servlet. * Replacing the HTML layer (90+) pages of the internal Orchestration Manager UI with a new look, less verbose implementation based on Twitter Bootstrap. The original implementation contained a huge amount of cut and pasted table based HTML containing inline CSS. That made addressing usability issues a prohibitive task that was always deferred prior to this rework. * Achieved performance improvements w.r.t. authentication/authorization for internal ESB-ESB requests. This was done by eliminating calls to another service by supplying JSON Web Tokens in the requests. * Performing significant refactoring to facilitate extraction of several libraries from a very large single library. Apart from reducing build times, it also removed many 3rd party dependencies downstream libraries were inheriting from the monolithic library. Show less
