Mechanical Engineering Co-op

May 2022 - Present
• Extensively redesigned Tatum's prototype tactile sign language hand to solve multiple problems with the previous design, including a more human-like thumb, more reliable finger ab/adduction, and a full rework of the wrist to enable better anthropomorphic motion. • Expanded the hand's capabilities to encompass the full range of possible American Sign Language hand shapes, introducing several letters that were missing in previous design iterations, and added a lateral translation axis to allow the hand to form repeated letters (i.e. in the word "moon"). • Transformed early rough prototypes into a well-packaged standalone robot, capable of operating in a user's home without careful supervision by a company engineer.

Assistant Technical Director
-
Aug 2019 - May 2021
• Acted as liaison between student theater groups and university staff to coordinate technical support for student productions, while ensuring they remained within the bounds of feasibility given time, space, and budgetary constraints. • Supervised teams of 5-10 student carpenters, all with varying degrees of experience, to construct and install sets for five large university productions and several smaller student shows. • Translated set designers' artistic hand draftings into construction-ready AutoCAD drawings, and worked closely with carpenters to ensure that they were realized according to design intent.

• Identified problem areas in the shop and developed solutions, such as quick-change 3D printer spool holders, easy-access rolling hardware carts, and a comprehensive machine tool training project. • Advised and assisted students on project design and fabrication, from drawing concept sketches by hand and CAD files in SolidWorks or Illustrator, up to creating CNC machine and laser cutter toolpaths or teaching how to use a drill press.

• Conceptualized over a dozen potential locations and attractions for Universal's upcoming Epic Universe theme park, drawing initial visualizations and early AutoCAD layouts that were used and expanded on by various partner teams. • Studied film stills, research images, and production documents to meticulously reverse-engineer specific intellectual properties down to the inch, work that was rewarded when late-arriving construction drawings from the production confirmed many tricky details.
