It is a truly a pleasure for me to recommend Jonathan Giezendanner as your future colleague. I am an Assistant Professor in Numerical Analysis in the Department of Informatics, Statistics and Environmental Sciences at the University of Venice, and I was Jonathan's co-advisor during his PhD at EPFL, from January 2016 to January 2020. During his PhD, Jonathan DEMONSTRATED his passion for the study of mountain population dynamics. In his insightful and innovative thesis, ‘Beyond the patch: on landscape-explicit metapopulation dynamics’, he showed how the smart combination of data-driven models and remote sensing data into process-based dynamical models can help to predict the fate and spatial distribution of mountain species. The original and highly-effective metapopulation framework developed by Jonathan merges advanced mathematical tools for data analysis, model calibration and uncertainty quantification, using both Earth observation and in-situ ecological data. Jonathan demonstrated an ability to master the theoretical basis and the application of these techniques, which, together with his intuition, critical thinking and strong computational skills, allowed him to go beyond the results obtained with state of the art models, as demonstrated in his publications in high level international peer-reviewed journals. I also had the pleasure to collaborate with Jonathan in the European-founded project ECOPOTENTIAL, which allowed me to better appreciate his other qualities: he is a tireless hard-worker who showed himself to be an excellent and extremely valuable participant in collaborative research. Jonathan has excellent attention to detail, and, at same time, he is able to deliver results that respect deadlines. I strongly recommend that you would give Dr. Giezendanner the opportunity to become your colleague.

I had the pleasure of supervising Jonathan during his master project on Bayesian Neural Networks for hydroclimatic forecasting at the laboratory of Ecohydrology at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). Jonathan quickly and independently mastered the theoretical and technical background of the project, and showed equal skill and stewardship in developing the computational tools required to answer the research questions he had contributed to formulate. In addition to strong technical skills and learning capacity, his remarkable perseverance and motivation enabled him to go above and beyond the expectations for a master project. These qualities will certainly serve him well in any future endeavor. Finally Jonathan’s integration in the laboratory was swift, and through his creativity and sense of community greatly contributed to a welcoming and inspiring working environment. I therefore warmly recommend Jonathan as your future colleague.
