PhD dissertation: “From Eye-witness to I-witness, Anthropological perspectives on Danish correspondents in the Middle East”The dissertation is an anthropological investigation of Danish television correspondents in the Middle East. It deals with one of the basic assumptions of foreign correspondence – that presence creates credibility. I show that the correspondent rarely is positioned in the immediate proximity of the events that he/she covers, but rather uses himself as a departure point for the report. Therefore I argue that instead of seeing the foreign correspondent as an eyewitness, we should understand him/her as an I-witness. With the I-witness concept, I emphasise that the correspondent does not solely convey events in the Middle East, but performs them.
