Bio
Robert Blake
In 2005, Ixone Sadaba joined The International Center of Photography - General Studies Program - in New York City, which I directed from 1985-2008. I was introduced to her work in the core Seminar I taught each term. She was already an artist with a large appetite for learning, and an expressive personality. I enjoyed her energy and vitality, as well as her intellectual ability. She was engaged imaginatively with her family and its history, the geography of the Basque region, and an inner struggle to come to terms with the uncanny, as it appeared in her work. Ixone quickly set to acquire a wide range of technical skills including the use of 4x5 large format cameras, analog and digital lab skills, and hands on experience in professional lighting. However it was her critical/dialectical reasoning (in a second language) that developed a "praxis" directly evident in her work, and I responded strongly to her talent and obvious learning ability. Post graduation at ICP Ixone and I have continued to track each other's work and life. She lived in New York and we had occasion to have studio visits and serious conversation. When I was in Arles, France at an annual Festival she arrived from Spain and met many friends from her days at school. Ixone is bright, talented, serious, funny, reads, and is able to articulate thoughts and feelings. Most of all she is a creative being with the resonance of her origins, cultural memory and people.
