Close to 30 years experience (since 1987) in studying industrial, as well as medically important biofilms in natural habitats and man-made systems. Current activities focus on -omics (metagenomics and metabolomics) and surface science to elucidate biotic interfacial processes (biofilm/metal, fuel/liquid interactions) driving materials deterioration. The US Office of Naval Research (ONR) -sponsores studies on marine biocorrosion and biodegradation of naval fuels/biofuel blends. Working with OU Biocorrosion Center (focusing on Microbiologically-Influenced Corrosion (MIC) in Oil and Gas Industry, including fracking operations). together with the group of Jan Summer developing laser assisted metabolomic imaging and rapid nucleic acid recovery from complex specimens (see description in the Summary section). Collaborating with institutions in Brazil (ONR Global and Brazilian CAPES sponsored research) with Drs Marcia Lutterbach and Fatima Bento) as well as with prof. Beata Gutarowska, from Technical University of Lodz in Poland (genomics and metabolomics related to biodeterioration of historic materials, mainly artifacts from Auschwitz-Birkenau, as well as with Australia (prof. Robert Melchers of the University of New Castle and Dr Tim Lee of AMOG Consultants in Houston, TX) on accelerated marine corrosion. Current members of Beech/Sunner research groups include (in alphabetic order) post doctoral fellows, Drs Egemen Aydin, Vincent Bonifray, Jon Brauer, Sukriye Celikkol-Aydin and Zakari Makama, and PhD students Anjumala Herath, Eric Kauffman and Matthew Kowalski. The groups are working closely. Currently hosting a PhD "sandwich student" Aline Oliboni from UFRGS in Porto Alegre, Brazil, visiting prof. Dr Akiko Ogawa from the Univ. in Suzuka, Japan and co-host visiting prof. Dr Sylvie Le Borgne of the Univ. in Mexico City. Prof. Christine Gaylarde of the UK is formally affiliated with OU and the teams. She will visit OU from the 20th April until the 20th May 2015.
