ASL is Europe's leading manufacturer of public address and voice alarm systems. They also developed an impressive site control systems that incorporates full 3D models of the site, be it a railway station, shopping mall, hospital or even the odd palace! As part of a small close-knit team Iwar performed many different engineering tasks. Most notable efforts include the prestigious Gautrain rapid railway project in Johannesburg SA for which Iwar was left on his own to design and develop passenger information systems for use on ASL's proprietary public address system. The first phase of Africa's first high speed railway was completed in time for the FIFA 2010 world cup finals. Other projects include fire panel network integration and several other passenger information systems on various train systems across the globe. Show less

TA Instruments, a subsidiary of Waters Corporation, are a leader in the development and supply of rheology and thermal analysis instruments to various industries including food and pharmaceuticals. Never has one seen so much science and engineering packed into a machine the size of a small vacuum cleaner. This contract is a one-person project in the UK based rheology branch of TA Instruments where Iwar was tasked with the enhancements to ‑ and bug fixing of ‑ the current control and data analysis software while the main software development team of TA’s R&D department embarked on a new collaborative project with colleagues from the US. Elekta are a leading supplier of radio-therapeutic equipment to the medical industry. Part of a medium sized team working on a revolutionary new volume imaging system to allow more accurate targeting of the patient’s tumour. Iwar's role mainly focuses on the development of the kilo voltage / X-ray generator control system and the Controller Area Network (CAN) abstraction layer that enables the interaction between the main application and the system’s hardware. Aircom provide the mobile phone network operating industry with a suite of tools with which their networks of telephone masts/antennae can be optimised for better coverage, improved quality and other figures of merit. Part of a small team working on the beta release of a new tool for automated optimisation. Unfortunately, this role didn't quite work out for Iwar and he called short on his probation. The market leader in supplying semi-conductor tools to the chip manufacturing industry, this company boasts the slogan that any chip in today's electronic devices has gone through at least one of its machines in the process of its manufacture. The British based implant division (closed in 2007) probably engineered and manufactured the biggest, most complex piece of machinery in the Applied Materials catalogue, namely the ion implanter. Part of an extensive team responsible for the development of the control software for a whole new breed of ion implanter. Iwar's tasks involved analysis and design in Microsoft Visio (UML) and implementation in Visual C++ using COM/ATL. Personal highlights include the development of: • The booster subsystem responsible for increasing the ion beam energy via RF acceleration. • The analysing magnet subsystem for high mass resolution. • Beamline monitoring. • Enhancements to the software development framework.
