Laboratory Assistant/Component Manufacturing Trainer
-
Oct 2018 - Present
I was hired as a component manufacturer of whole blood products then promoted to full-time laboratory assistant that works with a fellow CLS to culture platelet products as well as process these platelets to their final product. I perform my work in an accurate, precise, timely and responsible manner as well as put in as much effort as I can give, because not only does my work directly impact the patients at our local hospitals, but all of the hospitals of Kern County-it is the blood products that I process and manufacture that are helping save lives. This was especially true when we were tasked to manufacture Covid-19 convalescent plasma for the patients that were infected with SARS-CoV-2. We were all doing our part to make sure the hospitals had these life saving products on their shelves; we couldn’t do this without the generosity of our donors and the hard work of all of us at Houchin. I was very committed to my occupation as a component manufacturer, especially when promoted to component manufacturing trainer. I work closely with everyone in the department to ensure that they are well trained in their duties, and if there is anything they have questions on regarding their tasks, or anything in general regarding blood, plasma, or platelets, they know that they can come to me and I will gladly answer any questions they might have (it helps that I have a background in microbiology to help answer certain questions). I was part of the Science Education Alliance-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science Program, where I worked in a 4-person research team, that was tasked to isolate a novel bacteriophage from a locally sourced soil sample. This bacteriophage was to infect Mycobacterium smegmatis, a close relative of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis. The purpose of this experiment was to isolate a phage capable of infecting M.smegmatis so that our results can be used to further develop bacteriophage therapy (using phages to develop a new technique to combating infectious bacteria) in hopes of using bacteriophages instead of always relying on antibiotics. Our team kept accurate data of the specimen collected, and we performed experiments on the novel phage to determine its characteristics; we stored this information in our phage database. After performing the experiments, our team worked together with fellow research colleagues to annotate the genome of the novel phage using National Institute of Health (NIH) annotation software BLASTp and BLASTx We entered bacteriophage data in http://phagesdb.org/ under the name SgtBeansprout. We then Interpreted the research findings and summarized data into a poster presentation. Show less
